Gustav Ichheiser: Misunderstandings in International Relations

Timeless Insights that Speak for Themselves

Ichheiser hits some of his most important themes in this article. Blindness to the obvious, the idea that we believe we see things as they are while only seeing them as we perceive them to be, and limitations of insight creating misunderstandings in the form of a pretense of ‘understanding’ (Pseudo-understanding).

I found conscious and unconscious nationalism very insightful. In the USA one espousing internationalism likely does so because the USA currently(2025) dominates in international affairs.

Cultural misunderstanding as emotional was interesting as well. Human personality is very subjective, but we tend to believe we operate from objective truth and this leads to the misunderstanding Ichheiser so masterfully untangles. (T.J.L. 2/28/2025)
